Meet CloudKnitCo: undyed merino from the Welsh hills

On a hill farm in Powys, Rhian and Owen raise sheep, spin their wool in small batches and crochet it into some of the calmest, most natural toys we have ever found. Nothing is dyed, and almost nothing is wasted.

The story

Rhian grew up on the farm; Owen joined after twenty years as a carpenter. When wool prices fell so low that shearing cost more than the fleece was worth, they decided to use the wool themselves.

Today their flock's wool is washed and spun at a small mill in mid-Wales, then crocheted at the kitchen table into sheep, lambs and baby blankets. The cream comes from their white ewes, the dark brown from a handful of black Welsh Mountain sheep.

In their own words

Why undyed wool?

Because it is already beautiful. Every fleece has its own tone, and we would rather show that than cover it up.

Is wool a good choice for toys?

For older children, absolutely — it is naturally fresh, warm and durable. For babies we recommend our cotton range instead, and we always say so in the listing.

How long does one sheep take?

About four hours of crochet, plus the weeks it takes to wash, card and spin the wool. Slow, but that is the point.

What is next for CloudKnitCo?

A small range of blankets from the same flock — each one labelled with the names of the sheep it came from.

"From our sheep to your shelf — nothing in between but a hook."
