Meet LittleFernStitches: woodland creatures from Cork
Aoife crochets foxes, hedgehogs and toadstools in a cottage a few minutes from the sea in West Cork. Her creatures all look a little bit sleepy — and that, she says, is entirely on purpose.

The story
Aoife taught herself to crochet from videos during a long winter in 2020. Her first fox was "a lumpy orange potato", she laughs — but her sister asked for one, then her sister's friends, and by spring LittleFernStitches had its first Etsy listing.
Her designs are inspired by the woods behind her cottage: foxes with curled-up tails, red-capped toadstools, ferns and moss-green plant hangers. Everything is made in soft cotton, and every creature has the same sleepy, half-closed smile.
In their own words
Why are your animals always sleepy?
Because that is when animals are cutest! And I think sleepy toys are calming for children at bedtime.
Where do your ideas come from?
Walks in the woods with my dog. If I see a fox in the morning, there is usually a new fox design by the evening.
What yarn do you use?
Mostly a soft Irish-spun cotton. It is gentle, it washes well and the colours are perfect for woodland greens and browns.
What do you love most about making?
The messages. People send me photos of their children asleep with a fox tucked under one arm. Nothing beats that.
