Crochet ghost with witch hat toilet paper holder pattern

Friendly, not spooky — this smiling ghost wears a purple witch hat and carries a tiny pumpkin charm. With its wavy hem and star appliqués, it is the Halloween pick of the bundle, and the widest holder in the set.

The pattern

  1. Step 1: Wide Basket Body and Toilet-Paper Opening

Ghost with Witch Hat toilet paper holder, step 1: wide basket body and toilet-paper opening

This holder uses the wider 64-stitch basket. Work in continuous rounds.

    • Foundation: Ch 19.
    • R1: 2 sc in 2nd ch, sc 16, 4 sc in last ch; underside sc 16, 2 sc in first. (40)
    • R2: Inc in next 2, sc 16, inc in next 4, sc 16, inc in next 2. (48)
    • R3: (Sc, inc) ×2, sc 16, (sc, inc) ×4, sc 16, (sc, inc) ×2. (56)
    • R4: (2 sc, inc) ×2, sc 16, (2 sc, inc) ×4, sc 16, (2 sc, inc) ×2. (64)
    • R5: BLO sc around. (64)
    • R6–R13: Sc around. (64 each)
    • R14 (opening): Sc 19, ch 26, skip 26 sts, sc 19. (64 including chain)
    • R15: Sc 19, sc 26 across the chain, sc 19. (64)
    • R16–R20: Sc around. (64 each)
    • Top edge: Sl st around once. FO, leaving a 25 cm tail. Target: 19–20 cm wide, 15–16 cm deep, 14–15 cm high.

Do the roll fit check before continuing.

  2. Step 2: Ghost Body, Witch Hat, and Wavy Hem

Ghost with Witch Hat toilet paper holder, step 2: ghost body, witch hat, and wavy hem

Ghost upper body (white): R1 6; increase by 6 each round through R10 = 60; R11–R16 sc 60; R17 (8 sc, dec) ×6 = 54; R18 54. Leave open, lightly stuff the upper area only, and sew the lower edge to the basket top.

Witch hat (purple): R1 6; R2 9; R3 12; then increase 3 sts every other round until 36 sts. Work 3 plain rounds. Brim: FLO inc every 3rd st to 48, next round inc every 4th st to 60, final round sc 60. Shape the tip with your fingers; do not pack it tightly.

Wavy hem (white): Ch 71, sc 70. Row 2: 3 dc in each 2nd st to create a ruffle. Row 3: sc along the outer edge. Target hem 50–55 cm relaxed; pin evenly around the base before sewing.

  3. Step 3: Pumpkin Charm, Arms, Stars, and Moon

Ghost with Witch Hat toilet paper holder, step 3: pumpkin charm, arms, stars, and moon
    • Pumpkin charm (orange): R1 6, R2 12, R3 18, R4–R6 18, R7 (sc, dec) ×6 = 12, stuff, R8 dec ×6 = 6. Add a green stem (5 sc × 4 rounds) and embroider a tiny face.
    • Arms ×2 (white): 12 sc × 9 rounds, lightly stuffed.
    • Stars: MR, repeat [ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch, sc in next ch, sl st into MR] ×5.
    • Moon: Ch 12, work dc increases along one side to curve; sew flat.
  4. Step 4: Final Assembly

Ghost with Witch Hat toilet paper holder, step 4: final assembly

Attach the ghost dome to the basket, then the wavy hem around the bottom. Add the arms, hat, pumpkin charm, stars, and moon. Keep the roll opening completely clear. Add the face last, so its symmetry matches the final hat position.

Finishing & quality check

Use this same finishing order for every design in the collection:

  1. Block and shape the empty basket, and verify the roll opening.
  2. Attach the major head/top section, centered over the opening.
  3. Pin paired parts first; compare them from the front and side before sewing.
  4. Sew accessories and decorative parts only after the structural seams are secure.
  5. Insert the roll, adjust the shaping, weave in all tails, and perform the final size check.

Final quality checklist — before you call it done:

  • Roll slides in and out freely
  • Holder stands without tipping
  • Paired parts are symmetrical
  • No stuffing is visible
  • All yarn tails are buried
  • Eyes and decorations are secure
  • Finished dimensions are within about 1 cm of target

Care & placement

  • Place finished holders on a dry shelf or floor position beside the toilet.
  • Keep them away from direct moisture, shower spray, wet floors, and sink splashes.
  • Leave the roll opening unobstructed.
  • Spot clean only. Reshape while damp and air dry completely.
  • Hide all yarn tails inside the work, and reinforce load-bearing attachment points.
  • For child-accessible decor, embroider eyes instead of using removable small parts.
