Crochet mushroom house toilet paper holder pattern

This storybook design turns the holder itself into a tiny house: a cream cottage body, a green door and glowing windows, climbing vines and flowers, all under a big red spotted mushroom cap. Here, the roll opening cleverly doubles as the house front.

The pattern

  1. Step 1: Wide House Basket Body and Toilet-Paper Opening

Mushroom House toilet paper holder, step 1: wide house basket body and toilet-paper opening

Work the wider 64-stitch basket in cream, exactly as for the Ghost (chain 19 foundation, increase to 64 at R4, BLO fold at R5, opening at R14 with ch 26 / skip 26). Keep the walls straight.

The front roll opening doubles as the house doorway opening, so the decorative door panel must be placed beside or below it — never across it. Finish with a slip-stitch top edge and do the roll fit check.

  2. Step 2: Door and Windows

Mushroom House toilet paper holder, step 2: door and windows

Door (green): Ch 13. Row 1: sc 12. Rows 2–18: sc 12. For a rounded top, decrease 1 stitch at each edge on every row until 4 stitches remain. FO. Surface-stitch vertical brown lines if desired and add a tiny yellow knob.

Windows (make 2): Yellow square: ch 7, sc 6 for 6 rows. Brown frame: surface slip stitch around all edges, then add one vertical and one horizontal bar.

  3. Step 3: Mushroom Cap, Spots, and Florals

Mushroom House toilet paper holder, step 3: mushroom cap, spots, and florals

    Mushroom cap (red): R1 6, R2 12, R3 18, R4 24, R5 30, R6 36, R7 42, R8 48, R9 54, R10 60, R11 66, R12–R14 66. Brim — R15: (10 sc, inc) ×6 = 72; R16 72. Do not heavily stuff; use a thin removable stuffing pad, or stitch the cap directly over the house top.

Spots and florals: Spots ×5 (cream): 6 sc in MR, increase to 12, FO flat. Leaves using the ch 8 leaf method. Flowers: 5-petal MR in pink, yellow, and cream. Crochet a vine cord of ch 35–45 and surface-sew it around the door and windows.

  4. Step 4: Final Assembly

Mushroom House toilet paper holder, step 4: final assembly

Sew the door and windows first, then the vines and flowers. Attach the mushroom cap evenly around the top, keeping a 2–3 cm overhang. Add the cream spots. Insert the roll and check that the front opening remains unobstructed. Final target size: 23 × 18 × 18 cm.

Finishing & quality check

Use this same finishing order for every design in the collection:

  1. Block and shape the empty basket, and verify the roll opening.
  2. Attach the major head/top section, centered over the opening.
  3. Pin paired parts first; compare them from the front and side before sewing.
  4. Sew accessories and decorative parts only after the structural seams are secure.
  5. Insert the roll, adjust the shaping, weave in all tails, and perform the final size check.

Final quality checklist — before you call it done:

  • Roll slides in and out freely
  • Holder stands without tipping
  • Paired parts are symmetrical
  • No stuffing is visible
  • All yarn tails are buried
  • Eyes and decorations are secure
  • Finished dimensions are within about 1 cm of target

Care & placement

  • Place finished holders on a dry shelf or floor position beside the toilet.
  • Keep them away from direct moisture, shower spray, wet floors, and sink splashes.
  • Leave the roll opening unobstructed.
  • Spot clean only. Reshape while damp and air dry completely.
  • Hide all yarn tails inside the work, and reinforce load-bearing attachment points.
  • For child-accessible decor, embroider eyes instead of using removable small parts.
